Emergence as a Research Powerhouse:
The early 20th century witnessed a surge in scientific research at UW. The establishment of the Puget Sound Biological Station in 1903 marked the beginning of a long tradition of groundbreaking discoveries in fields such as marine biology, oceanography, and environmental science. UW’s research efforts were further strengthened by the establishment of the College of Engineering in 1919.
World War II and the Post-War Era:
During World War II, UW played a vital role in the war effort. The university’s faculty and students contributed to research projects that aided the Allies, and the campus became a center for military training. After the war, UW experienced a surge in enrollment as returning veterans took advantage of the GI Bill to pursue higher education.
